The property sits in a verdant suburban area, surrounded by detached homes on large, mature gardens. This lush setting offered both opportunities and responsibilities — the design needed to integrate sensitively with its context while maximising the site's generous, south-facing garden.
The client’s brief was to extend the house over two floors to the rear, creating a spacious, light-filled open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area at ground level, and enhancing the first-floor bedrooms with improved views of the garden.
Our design focused on orientation, natural light, and visual connection to the outdoors. The rear extension opens the house to the garden, with large glazed openings that create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. Inside, the open-plan layout supports a sociable, flexible living space.
A defining feature in the design is the articulated rear elevation, designed to be visually striking from the garden. The distinctive triple-gable form at first floor gives each bedroom its own generous projection and framed garden view, while establishing a strong architectural identity.
We worked closely with the client, various consultants, and planning officers to ensure the proposal met the brief, respected the character of the area, and complied with planning policy.
